Thanks to Norman Brown who passed us these photos and postcards of Bankend to let you have a look at! We did try to take a photo in the same place for comparison but bushes, trees and signs made it a bit difficult. And is it just us, but the roads back then look better kept than our modern ones at times! (less HGVs around, probably).

And finally, Norman has two photos of the bridge. One about 50 years ago, and the other more recent. Use the slider to see the difference!

I came across your site when researching my 1 Mary Ellen Smith,2 Mary Smith, and 3 Elizabeth Smith, great grand mothers. As far as I know they lived at Loaning Head, Bankend Caerlaverock. Does anyone know if any of the family still live there, or what living conditions were like in the 1840’s onward, or any information at all. Are there any photo’s of the Churchyard showing MI’s. I know it’s a long shot but thought it worth trying.
Thank you.

Shall make a post for the website for you Shona, to see if anyone can help out with more info. Will share it on Facebook too, so have a wee look there too, as there may be comments there too.
