Margaret Hamilton lives in North Ayrshire, but has strong ties to the Dumfries area through her mother’s folks. She has been in touch, with this insight into the Edgars of Glenhowan:
“Today I came across your website and a photo of the Golden Jubilee of the Caerlaverock/ Glencaple Women’s Guild. Included in the photo was Agnes Edgar (centre right) aged 92 at the time. I noticed that her sister, Jean Edgar was also in the photo on the far right. The newspaper cutting [below] reminded me of one which I inherited from my mother which shows the three Edgar sisters of Glenhowan. My mother has scribbled ‘95’ above the photo of Agnes so it must have been taken three years after the Golden Jubilee photo.
My mother’s grandmother and my great grandmother was Mary Edgar, born at Glenhowan in 1867 to John Edgar and Jessie McKenzie. What I’m not sure about is the exact relationship between Mary Edgar and the three sisters. I’m guessing that they could have been her nieces.”

Lovely to read the above article as I distinctly remember the Miss Edgars from when Billy and I first moved to Glenhowan more than 35 years ago. I remember them being very genteel and ( being not long out of my teenage years myself) incredibly elderly. Entering the house was like stepping back in time particularly for a couple of young townies. Happy memories
I remember gathering Tatties as a boy at Glenhiwan.
Gordon Hanlon worked on the farm then.
We were paid 12/- thats 60p nowadays forour days work.
They also supplied the 10 o’clock , lunch and 3 o’clock.
That’s where my love of soda scone cheese and strawberry jam came from.

Thanks for your memory of Glenhowan. I’m assuming that Billy Little is your husband. I don’t suppose he is any relation to my mother’s cousin, Billy Little? They stayed for a while at Mid Crossleys in Holywood.

I realise I have found this article a long time after it was posted…but I think we are related Margaret! My great grandfather was John Edgar, born in 1874/5 to Thomas and Agnes Edgar at Glenhowan. He married Christina (Teena) in 1899 and they lived the rest of their lives in Pollokshields in Glasgow. John was a cabinet maker. My grandmother was their daughter Agnes, born in 1904. Her daughter is my Mum and still living near us in Glasgow in her mid 80s. We often visit Dumfries and Galloway and recently located Glenhowan farm. My Mum has strong memories of going to visit as a child. . It would be great to hear from you.

…after a bit of research Margaret, I think your Great Grandmother, Mary, was the sister of Thomas Edgar. Thomas was the father of Agnes, Jean, and Charlotte, so yes, you are correct, these ladies were your great Grandmother’s nieces. Thomas was my great, great, grandfather.

John Edgar his son of 56 Fore Street. Glasgow was my grandfather.
