Sharon Bissett got in touch with a very important message for everyone driving around Caerlaverock (and on all country roads) at this time of year in particular,

“to be more mindful than usual of dog walkers and pedestrians as it is currently difficult to move out of the way safely… with little or no option to get off the road completely…”

Sharon asked about hedge cutting around the parish as “the roads appear to becoming narrower daily, with it often being dangerous to walk dogs on as it is nigh on impossible to get into the side safely”.

There is currently a national hedge cutting ban in place. It extends between (and including) the months of March and August, as documented in this Dumfries and Galloway What’s Going On article to protect nesting and fledging birds. The National Farmers Union posted a reminder to all farmers about the ban earlier this year.

Most pedestrians are also drivers – we can all play our part in looking out for each other. Pedestrian deaths on rural roads do happen… Please let’s all take extra care to avoid alarm, at least, as well as any future injury or fatalities.

Thank you Sharon, for raising these issues.
