Peter Quelch has been in touch. He is assisting with a landscape history study around Caerlaverock Castle. He asks:

I’m intrigued by old maps and documents which point towards not only a ford on the coastal road from Annan across the R Lochar leading to Blackshaw, but also a ford across the R Nith as a way to New Abbey. Is there any local knowledge of such a ford and where it might be sited on each bank of the estuary? It seems to me that the name Lantonside might be a clue as to the east end of the ford, or am I just imagining things?

Does anyone know of a ford across the Nith? Please get in touch!
