Anne Maclean has been in touch, asking if anyone can help as she is researching her husband’s family who lived around Caerlaverock in the 1800s.
“My husband’s great grandfather was Robert McLean Gray and Robert’s brother was George Peter Phillips Gray. I believe that their mother was Elizabeth Gray who died quite young, so I know that they lived with their grandmother Nicholas McLean.
We had always wondered how the McLeans came to live in Dumfrieshire as it is a highland name.
I believe that Elizabeth’s grandfather was George McLean. Robert was educated at Hutton Hall Academy.
Any information would be gratefully received.”

Well firstly I would say if the Maclean’s are a Highland name then either one of the parents was in the army up north or travelled south to makemonety and met the other soulmate.
Remember that the railways were a bigger influence of the change of society and population growth and people just moved now with ease for the. .
Really could be they met for a thousand reasons, love and holidays is the same then as now lol.
