Gerry Donnelly (the undeniably exotic and unconventional proprietor of Vintage on the Nith in Glencaple), has sent us a wee message:

“As I approach the first anniversary of the opening of my wee vintage/antique shop, I would first like to take this opportunity to thank local people for their kindness and support throughout this time. I hope I am here to stay for some time.

One of the things I have been planning for a while is mounting small periodic exhibitions of work by local artists and others from abroad. At the moment, there are at least two other exhibitions in the pipeline. My first foray into this is a modest but marvellous exhibition by a Danish artist by the name of Louise Merian whose work I first encountered on Instagram.

She is, I think, an incredibly talented young artist whose work and development you can track on Instagram at @louisemerian_art. This exhibition contains just seven of her works (I have three of each) and they are limited edition giclee prints (each a run of 7). I will be selling these framed and unframed and I would encourage you to visit and have a wee gander.

The large ones will be priced £110 framed and £70 unframed, the smaller ones £75 framed and £45 unframed. They will make the most unique and beautiful of Christmas gifts.

LOUISE MERIAN
Danish Artist & Illustrator

‘Louise Merian is a young, self-taught Danish artist, who recently got her hands on a book illustrated by Harry Clarke and immediately fell in love with his dark gothic romanticism. His drawings awoke her creative urge from a long sleep and she came round again with fairy tales and strong symbolism burned into her retina. It led to the creation of a series of highly detailed ink illustrations of well-known stories by for example Shakespeare and The Grimm Brothers – as well of her own imaginations and dreams.

Other artists like John Austen, Hannah Frank, Aubrey Beardsley and The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood are great inspirations as well. Asides from drawing, she also paints deeply personal self-portraits which resulted in her appearing in the Danish version of Portrait Artist of the Year in 2019. On a day to day basis she studies Theology in the University of Copenhagen, engaging with those large, eternal symbols she is so drawn to.’
