Exciting times – many thanks to Alison Robertson who shared her fascinating find in Glencaple this morning!

“During a sunny spell between showers just now I popped out to get some fresh air … and guess what was hovering in front of the Viper’s Bugloss? A Humming-bird Hawk-moth! A migrant from southern Europe and North Africa, no doubt brought in by the recent southerly winds… thought folk might like to look out for them. Commonest on the South coast of England, as you’d expect. We do get them in Dumfriesshire but not every year by any means.”

Her super shot shows just how fast their wings beat! If you haven’t seen one – they look exactly like a miniature humming bird! Absolutely amazing – quite a thrill! And quite possibly the top thing we’d love to see in our garden! Keep your eyes peeled Caerlaverockans!
