With very many thanks to Tom Brown for sending us these photos and information about the fantastic, brand new Haaf Netters’ benches at Glencaple Quay, New Abbey and Carsethorn.

Tom gave us the following information about the new seats: 

  • The seats were donated by the Nith Estuary Haaf Net Fishers Association.
  • Funding was secured from the South West Environmental Action Trust (SWEATS).
  • They were manufactured by Ray Cole (Ray’s Welding), Gretna.
  • They are designed to reflect a Nith Haaf Net as opposed to ones on display in Annan.
  • They ‘celebrate our heritage and all Haafer no longer with us’.

“Sadly legislation in 2016 has all but put paid to Haaf Netting. The Western side from Airds Point to Carsethirn is deemed coastal fishings. This has an indefinite ban placed on it now. All fishings on that side are closed now.”
