Whilst bin collection days remain unaffected this year, there will be no bulky / white goods uplifts between 21 December 2018 and 6 January 2019.

You can leave an additional 2 refuse bags with your normal weekly refuse collection throughout January 2019.

How about making a New Year resolution to refuse and reduce your intake and output of rubbish in 2019?! Think about what you buy – do you really need it? Does it have to be covered in plastic and/or unnecessary packaging? Is there an alternative that won’t fill your wheelie bin to the brim or that will last longer than just the once?

Recycling Centres

All recycling centres are closed on:

  • Tuesday 25 December
  • Wednesday 26 December
  • Tuesday 1 January
  • Wednesday 2 January

Everyone deserves to have some time off! 

Normal opening times operate on all other days apart from:

Lochar Moss HWRC: closes at 4pm on  Monday 24 and  Monday 31 December

Lincluden HWRC: closes at 4pm on Monday 24 and Monday 31 December

Disposal of Christmas trees

Real Christmas trees
Real Christmas trees can be taken to a household waste recycling centre as green waste. If you compost at home, the branches can go in your compost bin.

Composting at home is the perfect solution to filling your bin with stuff that could be used in the garden instead! Christmas tree branches make excellent assault courses for cats to stop them doing their business in your borders…

They also add a woodier element to a compost heap which may otherwise be a soggy mess of grass cuttings and kitchen peelings… 

Alternatively, if you have space, dry it out and burn it next year for a truly authentic, well seasoned, Christmassy scented glow! 

You can also make a tea from pine-needles – they are full of vitamin C which can stop a common cold in its tracks!

Why would you want to consign the thing to your bin? 

Alternatively, real trees can be cut into lengths up to 1 metre long and placed out for collection alongside your wheeled bin or refuse sacks until Friday 18 January 2019.

Alternatively buy a rooted tree and plant it out in your garden. Or buy one in a pot and bring it inside to keep nice and warm over Christmas. 

Electrical / Fibre Optic Christmas trees
Electrical and fibre optic trees can be taken to a household waste recycling centre as a small domestic appliances. Broken Christmas tree lights can also be put in this container for recycling.

But before you chuck them out, see if you can work out (one at a time) which is the broken bulb – and replace it. Voila – a set of Christmas tree lights that work again! Its a great game for all the family at Christmas time…

Unwanted Artificial Christmas trees
Non electrical artificial Christmas trees can be placed in your wheeled bin or refuse sacks for disposal.

Poor unwanted Christmas trees…

Why not pass it on to someone who does wants one, or donate it to a charity shop?
