Many thanks to Alison Robertson for sending us these fantastic photographs of these magnificent moth caterpillars – found at Castle Corner and in their Glencaple garden!

Alison told us,

Chris and I spotted two rather eye-catching caterpillars this week: Alder Moth in Castle Wood and Elephant Hawk-moth in our garden. Both were about 1.5 inches (35 mm) long. The insets show what the adult moths will look like when they’re on the wing in late spring / early summer next year.

Keep your eyes peeled – you never know what you might see when you’re out and about in Caerlaverock (or even in the garden) – eye-catching indeed!
