Please see the details of Caerlaverock’s Remembrance Sunday in the poster below.
We will be putting posters up in the noticeboards tomorrow to let those who aren’t online know about this, but please share with anyone you know who may wish to come along.
Thank you to Tom who has sent us a rather poignant note he found about “Thankful Villages”:
“Did you know that at the end of World War I when cities, towns and villages erected war memorials to honour their dead, villages who lost no inhabitants could not build a war memorial.
Those villages were known as Thankful Villages. There were only 53 Thankful Villages in Britain. There are none in Scotland or Ireland and only one in the whole of France.
Factor in World War II deaths and those villages were known as Doubly Thankful Villages and that 53 dropped to 14.
It really shows what toll those two wars had on our young men.”
