Graham Bates (from Cheshire) has been in touch again, following the great success of making contact with another member of the family through our website (for which he is most grateful)!

He writes,

“To further my research into my ancestors, I wondered if there is a record of the family names on the headstones in the graveyard of your chapel ?

Also, does the kirk still hold the older parish registers on site ?

I am asking as my wife and I intend to spend some time in the spring of 2020 in your locality doing family history research.

Recently, I have come across information that takes the BARRON name in Bankend back to 1695 ! This takes me back 130 years further back in my research .”

Graham continues,

“The new information is that the name WILLIAM BARRON appears in the RECORD OF THE DUMFRIES REGISTER OF  TESTAMENTS of 1624-1800.

I just came across this when I was browsing a family history website. My next step is to check with the Dumfries library to see if they hold this register of wills and testaments.”

Can anyone tell us:

  • If there is a record of the family names on the headstones in Bankend Church graveyard?
    – How can we get a hold of it/ a copy of it?
  • Does the kirk still hold the older parish registers on site?
    – If so, how do we go about accessing these?
  • Does the Ewart hold this register of wills and testaments?

With thanks in advance.

If anyone has any other information about the Barron family, Graham would love to hear about it!
