Thank you to Claire Clarke who has been in touch,

“I’ve been trying to find out about the Bankend Mill that used to be here, and the history of the bridge – I was unsure whether the two were connected at one point – I know there was a dam (caal) and sluice gates.”

She came to a dead end at this point, but found out that Bankend’s first bridge came about in 1617 (the current one has been there since 1813). Before there was a bridge it sounds like it was a ford and a bank.

Claire sent the passage [above] which evidences this information.

Does anyone have any more info about Bankend Mill or Bankend Bridge? Claire (and we!) would be very interested to hear what you know!
