Whilst we await the latest news re the Avian Influenza H5N1 locally, as currently local cases are being assessed in terms of disease control requirements, Suzanne McIntyre, Nature Reserve Manager, has kindly sent us the most up-to-date official statement (as provided by Defra and the Animal and Plant Health Agency to Scottish Government). 

The NNR have put disinfectant mats across the reserve with signage to indicate this is biosecurity measure, D&G council have also put up signs; while people stay on the paths there is very little risk.

Bird Flu Update – 22 November 2021

Avian Influenza H5N1 has been confirmed in wild birds on the Solway

NHS Dumfries and Galloway have advised that the public health risk is “very low” but it is important not to touch any sick or dead birds and to report any incidents to Defra on 03459 335577

If anyone has recently handled a sick or dead bird, especially without benefit of personal protective equipment, they can receive advice by contacting public health on 01387 246246

Regarding disposal of dead birds, given the geography and proximity of recent confirmations of H5N1 on the Solway it must be assumed that dead birds have been infected and need to be reported and disposed of as category 1.
