A random search of The National Galleries of Scotland Artworks section, looking for “Caerlaverock” brought up some lovely old artworks of Caerlaverock Castle, and one rather splendidly named portrait –
The Honourable Marmaduke C. Maxwell of Caerlaverock and Terreagles, 1760 – 1819
[sic]
A wee ‘google’ reveals that he was born on the 2nd of January 1760 and was the son of William Constable and Lady Winifred Maxwell. He married Theresa Apollonia Wakeman, daughter of Edmund Wakeman, on 26 November 1800 and they had 7 children. He lived at Caerlaverock Castle and died on 30th June 1819 at the age of 59.
Lady Clare got in touch to let us know that he is in fact her great-great-great-great-grandf
