Caerlaverock Castle has featured on the BBC news website – see this link!

Historic Environment Scotland have created this amazing architectural 3D model in order to have a detailed, digital record of the castle.

Try zooming in, out and round about the castle as well as reading information boards. It’s almost as good as being there yourself! [The castle remains closed due to the coronavirus restrictions at the time of writing]

HES explain that the model was created “using a combination of laser scanning and terrestrial and UAV photogrammetry. The high res mesh was then retopologised and diffuse and normal maps were baked down from the high poly model. Other elements such as the bridge and interpretation boards were added in manually”.

HES are responsible for over 300 properties of national importance, thousands of objects & millions of images. They carry out research, advise and regulate works to help understand and care for our historic environment.
