Yesterday [Friday 20th September 2018] saw the culmination of a lot of hard work.

A crowd of supporters from Glencaple, Caerlaverock Primary School, Bankend, Kelton and further afield came to support the presentation of the community speed reduction proposal document, ‘20 is Plenty, Glencaple‘ and accompanying letter to council officials at their Headquarters in Dumfries.

Dumfries and Galloway Council Director of Economy, Environment and Infrastructure, Alistair Speedie accepted the document, with the following words:

“To explain the process when we receive petitions, I will report this to my service committee, (Economy, Environment and Infrastructure committee) whose next meeting is in November [2018]. It won’t be a specific report – it will be mentioned in the capital report where we have a programme for speed limits and safer routes to schools etc.

Now, we’ll consider this with the many requests that we get, this isn’t our only request, and councillors will put together a programme where councillors will decide on the priorities and issues we should spend on.

We currently have a policy where we’re working through getting 20mph speed limits for all our schools, we have over a hundred schools, so we’re still working through that, but I guarantee we will consider it and we’ll do that report, and once we have an indication of how it might fall out in the programme, we’ll let you know.

Thank you, this looks a lovely document, you’ve done very well on pulling it together, so congratulations.

Speed is something that concerns us all and, really, we do a lot of traffic calming that you see. The way things are with our finances and the restrictions that on us – we’re the third largest roads authority in Scotland – 4200km of road, 1560 key structures, we have a very small population and council tax to support that, so our elastic band has to stretch and stretch and stretch…

I just don’t feel that putting down any more humps and bumps on roads… I liken it to putting icing on a crumbling cake because our roads need repaired, we’ve got plenty potholes, we’ve got loads of priorities that we just have to work through, but road safety is so important, and children’s safety is so important, so we’ll consider this very seriously.

Thank you again for all your hard work.”

And thank you again to everyone who signed petitions, made posters and the banner and contributed and took the time to help with the campaign, so far. Thanks also to Alba Printers in Dumfries for their excellent production services.
