The inaugural meeting of the Wednesday Wheelers was held on the third Wednesday in November 1998 with the aim of meeting each week for a bite to eat and a chat, not necessarily about bikes. There are no subscriptions, committees, chairpersons etc., simply a volunteer who compiles/ completes the list of venues and transmits the list to the ‘members’.
Everyone, whether current or former cyclist, friend, relative etc. is welcome. Arrive by bike, trike, tandem, recumbent, skateboard, bus, car – in other words, transport is optional!
‘Members’ usually ride in groups from the same area (arranged amongst themselves) or singly. From the start, there have been ‘members’ from Moffat, Annan, Lochmaben, Bankend, Dumfries, Thornhill, Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas, Kirkudbright, Gatehouse of Fleet, St. John’s Town of Dalry, and Penrith and places further west (Newton Stewart and beyond)! In some cases, the bikes have been transported part-way by car.
Meeting time is usually around 12 noon, but there has been a recent tendency to arrive 10 or 15 minutes earlier (for reasons unknown). Just ‘turn up on the day’ – no advance notice is normally required – except for the Christmas lunch for which the Laurie Arms, Haugh of Urr would like to know numbers in advance.
The present runs/ venues compiler is Raymond Finnie who Is retiring after 12 years. He will be succeeded by John Dewhurst.
