As we head towards winter, memories of 2014’s ‘tidal surge’ and flooding will still be fresh in the minds of many in the parish. In a tidal area, each storm or particularly high tide is always watched with concern, while run- off from surface water can also cause real problems.

A new scheme from SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) aims to provide advance warning of where and when flooding is likely to occur.

The Solway Firth Flood Warning Scheme covers twelve targeted areas at risk and can send alerts to residents’ phones whenever flooding is expected. Even if your property is not in danger, it will give warning of closed roads or problems with utilities.

The Flood line Scotland website also offers advice on preparing for and coping with flooding.

The Dumfries and Galloway Council ‘flooding’ website includes information about the flood product subsidy scheme. This allows residents or businesses to purchase protective items at subsidised cost. Products available include door barriers and temporary air vent or air brick covers. There is also an easily storable, vacuum-packed alternative to sandbags, containing a gel which expands in water. The

Council can also arrange for a free flood survey for your property, which will advise on the suitability of the products for your situation.
