Lots of recent news from the Nith Inshore Rescue team:

Crew have been working hard with swift water safety and rescue training in the River Nith, all three of our boats have been put through their paces with VHF radio and navigation training.

The annual Glencaple Shore Clean, organised in part by NIR, was a huge success. Hard working volunteers managed to clean almost 4km of coastline between Castle Corner and Kelton keeping our shore safe and looking better than ever. Thanks to all who helped.

In April we were called to Lochmaben to assist Police and Coastguard with the search for a missing child. Thankfully we were stood down at the scene when the 8 year old boy turned up safe and well.

Two pager calls in the space of 2 hours on the 3rd May saw us called to the River Nith in Dumfries at 21:06 to assist the recovery of a small craft that went over the Caul. Stood down at 22:00 when craft recovered safely by the owners.
We were then called out again at 22:50 to reports of a small boat seen without occupants in the River Cairn. Stood down at 01:00 after information later came in that suggested occupants were OK. Police Scotland, Fire Brigade, Ambulance & Coastguard were also in attendance.

Our big boat, ‘St John’, has been fitted with two new, state of the art VHF radios to help improve our communications whilst on callouts. This has vastly improved the safety and abilities of crew to communicate with each other and the Coastguard.

This all comes at a cost and we are always massively grateful to all our supporters. In the past few months we have received some very generous donations.

As some of you will already know, a big thank you must go to Nationwide Building Society for nominating us for their Community Match Charity Award and thanks to all of you who voted, we won the top donation!
lifebuoy-for-webA huge thank you also goes to Dumfries Academy S6 pupils and staff for choosing us as their Christmas Song charity, and to all of you who donated.

Thanks to staff of Morrisons in Dumfries for their recent collection buckets at tills, and to the generous donations of customers.

Without the hard work of organisations and the generosity of local people we would never be able to continue our work.

Thank you.
