We will be identifying moths found in the traps over the weekend, we will try “dusking” (catching moths in nets) with a walk through castle wood and demonstration of sugaring techniques.

Following the last Moth Night, here is some exciting info from Alison about the first recorded sighting for Dumfriesshire of the Obscure Wainscot, found that night!
Obscure Wainscot was the first record for Dumfriesshire, so a really nice find. It’s a reedbed specialist, Common Reed being the foodplant of the caterpillar, and it’s mainly a southern species. So is it another one that’s moving north with climate change or has it been there all the time and nobody’s been lucky enough to find it? Who knows. “VC72” is Vice-county 72, ie Dumfriesshire. All biological recording follows the boundaries of the original “vice-counties” devised in 1852, so that if you’re looking at historical and modern records you’re comparing like with like. A vice-county “first” has set the bar rather high for the next moth night …!
