A Merchant Navy Memorial Stone for our region will be unveiled and dedicated in Dock Park, Dumfries, on Saturday 30 August at 11am.
This memorial has been initiated by members of the Dumfries and Galloway branch of the Merchant Navy Association (MNA), supported by Dumfries and Galloway Council and The People’s Project Dumfries. Members of the public are welcome to attend, especially those who are past or present members of the Merchant Navy in any capacity.
During both World Wars and other conflicts, upwards of 80,000 merchant seafarers lost their lives while serving as volunteers on mostly unarmed ships. Without their sacrifices, these conflicts could not have been fought or won.
This memorial serves as a focal point to commemorate those lost without trace and a reminder of their sacrifice.
The stone will be unveiled by Dr Fiona Armstrong, His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant for Dumfries.
