Chairman’s Report
Following our inaugural meeting on 29th June, our new association was formed. Our first official meeting was on 31st August 2016 and the decision was to meet 4 times a year, hosting open meetings in the Nith Hotel.
The Bank of Scotland was elected as the preferable bank. With funds in place – thanks to the generosity of mainly the camper vans – we have been able to run a healthy bank account.
Following our notification to Dumfries & Galloway council, work eventually started to repair the bridge at Bankend.
Some passing place signs have been installed along the road to Blackshaw and potholes have been repaired recently.
The Health board have cut the hedge between the three-road-ends and Crichton gate.
Various other ongoing requests, including moving the 30mph sign outside Nith Inshore Rescue.
Council cut backs have led to less in the way of services; less maintenance of road sides, grass cutting and road gullies. We have to do more ourselves rather than just expect them to turn up and fix things.
Success stories
Caerlaverock Community website/Facebook page.
Hutton Hall – well done to the new committee for all their work and the functions they put on.
60th Anniversary of Scottish National Heritage. All the various events earlier in the year and their 5th of July open day in the Barbour Hall.
Nith Inshore Rescue – new boat house completion. Open day & wedding venue.
Continuing Work
Members of the community and Community Association continue to carry out works in their own time and areas. Grass cutting, keeping signs clean, picking up litter, clearing snow, emptying dog poo bins and generally keeping our area looking good. It’s everybody’s responsibility.
Quay End
As you probably know the damaged building is being repaired and will be call “The Boathouse” and will take the form of a bistro and shop. It is scheduled to open next April.
Defibrillators
We have purchased 2 sets of defibrillators which have been fitted inside the telephone boxes at Bankend & Glencaple. They are secured in yellow lockable boxes (which are being left unlocked).
These were purchased via the “The Hub” which is an organisation which helps communities and is based in Friars Vennel. We were able, through them, to buy 2 sets and they organise training to which most of the committee were able to attend 2 weeks ago. We hope to have an open night with a trainer sometime in the near future. Date & venue to be decided.
With DGRI moving shortly to Castle Douglas Road, ambulance times from here will be longer so it was important to get these into place now. One of the plus sides to is that it may lessen the morning and evening traffic on the Bankend Road.
During the last year or so we have sadly lost some of our local residents – Peter James, John Dalrymple, Ian Hamilton, Bill McKinnon, Hector Anderson, Rab Kennedy, Jim Crosbie & Lady Mary Mumford. Please excuse me if I have forgotten anyone.
Thanks
To finish I would like to say thank you to our committee along with the many other people who work with us, the Nith Hotel for letting us host our meetings here, the Police & Councillors for attending our meetings and the members of the public who come along.
