Kenny Bean is going to bring his completely cool ‘caravan camera obscura’ and his upside down boxes for us all to experience at the NNR 60th Anniversary Celebrations on Saturday 15th July!
The Caravan Obscura is a mobile light installation using the principle of the original camera obscura. Images from the outside are projected onto the ceiling inside the caravan using lenses and mirrors. The installation was inspired by the legendary 1950’s experiment by scientist Ivo Kohler who wore upside down goggles for several weeks. After ten days he found that his brain had re-inverted everything so he could see normally!
Kenny explains that he ‘became interested in camera obscuras and the image lenses project when I started taking my cameras apart. I found it was more fun using the parts of the camera, the lenses and mirrors, than taking photographs. I now explore light as a material to be controlled and manipulated to create installations and projections.’

Venture into the caravan where Kenny will give you a quick explanation of the camera obscura principle, and tell you about the amazing Ivo Kohler experiment while you can see the outside image projected on the inside!
Once you get back out, walk around with an ‘upside down viewer’ and see the world in a whole new way!
Kenny will be in the school grounds in Glencaple all day, so put the date in your diary and come along and have some fun!
