Lady Herries of Terregles, patron of the Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre, officially opened a new training room, hospital block and holding kennels at the charity on Wednesday 25th November 2015.

The Centre have been working closely with Dumfries and Galloway Council who will be using the three new holding kennels under the dog warden service. The local authority has a statutory duty, must operate a dog warden service and deal with reported problems of stray dogs. By working together, it is hoped more positive futures will be found for the regions stray dogs.

A delighted Centre Manager, Fiona Clarkson, said “We now have a training room-come-meeting room and for the first time we have a kitchen for us humans. The hospital block will be used for dogs to recover after they have been to the vet and the holding kennels, funded by the council, will be used in conjunction with the dog warden service.”

The kennels have facilities to house thirty-five dogs, with accommodation for 3 dogs in rented premises at Stranraer as well as in foster homes.

Mrs Clarkson appealed for people to think carefully before they purchase a pet – especially at this time of year, the busiest for the centre… “With Christmas time comes added pressure and people bring dogs in for a variety of reason. People should think ahead, but the most common reason is for the changing circumstances of people which can include divorce, down-sizing and they should always have contingency plans in place.”
