What’s Missing around Glencaple?
As you travel from Dumfries towards the Auld Quay take a look around you.
Something is amiss, what can it be?
Well, that’s very easy to establish – Haaf Netters.
This ancient craft is being sent into a major decline due to the decision of the Scottish Government to put a category 3 status on the Nith.
This has had a dramatic effect on the number of people taking out tickets and fishing.
It’s to say the least very very hard for a Haafer to return fish. The lads who have 
been fishing have indeed been catching Salmon and Grilse and returning. Indeed the word is, its been a good start to the season, with good numbers of Sea Trout and Salmon running. Typically now we would be anticipating our main Grilse runs to start with Haafers out Flood and Ebb tides up and down the river. Alas thats not the case…
Hopefully Haaf Netters on the Nith don’t have the same fate as the Dodo. A few are probably just as old tho!
The Nith Estuary Haaf Netters Association are lobbying MSP’s, Fishery Board and anyone who will listen. This is to try and secure at least a small catch limit for the Netsmen, for the future.
It is hoped that after this season has passed we will be in a better position to secure something.
The wheels of government turn but for us it seems slowly.
I would ask that all Haaf Netsmen rejoin the Association or even take out their ticket.
I’m hopeful for the future – all be it going to be a lot different in the future.
