We left it a little late in the day for photos, but had the most lovely evening wander along the Core Path 32 from the Kelsick Road to Bankend yesterday evening. The warm summer air was laden with the scent of honeysuckle. It was all rather poetic!
After pinning the brand new ‘Caerlaverock Catch-up’ to the Bankend Bus Shelter, we headed back up towards the path, as it was getting a bit dark to walk along the busy road. And just as well we did, for there were John and Fiona Currie to greet us!
John and Fiona told us that they’d spent a good while with their strimmers claiming the path back from the chest-high nettles, brambles and undergrowth a couple of summers earlier. We reckoned they were underplaying the efforts! They have kept it looking neat, tidy and absolutely lovely since. What a fantastic job they’ve done – out of the goodness of their hearts – and it is very much appreciated!
The path was probably one originally used by farmers walking their horses from Bankend to the smiddy, who lived near Conheath/ Kelton way, to get them reshod. We chatted about how good it was that some of the old paths were opened up again, even through some definitely need wellies… And how it would be really good if there were a circuitous route – the only bit needed now is a path taking you down to Caerlaverock Castle.
Does anyone know who to get in touch with about this? Anyone know anyone?
We felt quite sorry that we’d left it until now to discover the Currie’s path – but awffy glad we did!
