We spotted Alison Roberston looking a bit shifty (in her own front garden!)… On enquiry, all was revealed!

Alison explained that,

“It was caught in our garden on Friday night and it’s called the Satellite moth, because of the two small dots on each wing either side of the large orange dot.

Adult Satellites first appear around now (you can sometimes find them feeding from ivy flowers after dark). They then hibernate and reappear in spring (it’s always a joy to see them again around March time and know they’ve survived the winter).

The Satellite is unusual in that the caterpillars start off eating the leaves of various broadleaved trees but when they get bigger they also eat each other – and any other caterpillars they come across!

After the photoshoot the moth was safely returned to the garden to sleep the rest of the day in the undergrowth.”
