Village Walk

On a school day p1 to 3’s went on a walk into the village to look at houses to learn about what they were made out of and how there were built. They talked about the materials they would use such as bricks, stones, sandstone and slate for the roof, also glass for windows .They were all in groups working together to try and find out what  the house looked like as they did sketches of the houses they looked at.

When they got back into class they were given a sheet to do working in groups to give each other’s ideas so they all knew what they were doing. On the sheet they had to name what kind of house it was e.g. bungalow, mansion, normal sized, big houses. They had such a fun time exploring the houses.

The Three Little Pigs

Before the holidays the p1-3 class were tasked to make different types of houses out of different materials.

We based the house on the story off the three little pigs. The first house was made out of straw (that Mrs. Spence brought in for us), the next one was made out of lolly-pop sticks (wood) and the last one was made out of Lego bricks (bricks and cement). To build the straw house we used art straws and real straw. The lolly-pop stick house was made out of lolly-pop sticks and cardboard. The last house was made out of Lego bricks.  We really enjoyed doing this.

Our House Design Challenge

As part of our topic, at the end of last term we had a fun design task to create a house out of different materials e.g. straws, Lego, cardboard and paper. We had 4 groups involving p1 to p7 – all working together. 1 group did a Lego house and the other three used cardboard, wood and paints.

It was good to get together and give our ideas and mix them up to make a fair Idea, and it was teaching us to work together and share.

After we had finished we looked at each other’s houses and we complimented each other on what was good. After we did that we got to take them home which was decided in a fair way as we thought the person who contributed the most could to take it home.

We also added some sort of renewable energy source that would power the house.  In one group they had a water feature representing hydro energy;   another group made solar panels and stuck them on top of their house which represented solar energy.

It was really interesting and fun at times, but was hard working with other people and agreeing with one another.
