The smoke alarm went off just before 0630 (we could hear it) and from our upstairs window we saw 2 fire engines. No flames visible but smoke could be seen coming out of the upstairs windows. Jets of water were aimed up at these windows, then much later we saw about 7 men and women with breathing apparatus entering by the back door carrying hose(s).
Don’t know what was going on round the other side of the shop as we can only see the north side. Smoke was all but extinguished by 0900 with just wisps still emanating.
We’re desperately hoping maybe the cafe and shop have been spared as there was no smoke coming from the downstairs windows – though who knows how far the smoke damage will extend?
What a disaster for the village, the area and Ann & Jim and the staff. Even if the shop is not gutted, all of Glencaple will be. A very sad day.
