The Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) recently estimated that by getting internet aware, as much as 80% of cyber crime can be prevented.
They remind us to keep our personal and banking information safe. To do this they recommend these 3 tips:
- Look out for https: – the ‘S’ indicates a secure server – your info will be safe
- Look for the padlock symbol – this is used by some sites as well as the ‘S’
- A green address bar can also indicate the site is secure
They suggest that regularly backing up your system, strong passwords and regularly updating software are also simple ways to help you stay safe.
They also recommend you use your head when using your email: be savvy, don’t open any unexpected email your don’t recognise; look out for spelling errors in otherwise plausible emails – some scammers can use names from your contact list or pretend to be your bank/ online company looking for your details – reputable companies will not contact you in this way; don’t respond to anything untoward – delete and move on and don’t click on enticing links unless you’re quite certain of the sender!
