Try your hand at short mat carpet bowls with this friendly bunch who meet inside the hall on Tuesdays during the winter months.

Location: Hutton Hall, Bankend.

Mixed bowls – short mat bowls

When? Every Tuesday aside from the first one of the month at 7:30pm, usually until around 9:30pm. Runs seasonally, beginning when the clocks fall back in Autumn. Take a look at our calendar for firm dates.

Where? Hutton Hall, Bankend.

Who? Anyone! Really – this is a mixed group made up of all ages and abilities. Folk come from all over Caerlaverock, from Bankend and outwith.

What do I need? Nothing – all the equipment is available in the hall for you to use.

How much does it cost? It is £3 per night, plus an annual membership fee of £7.50.

What happens? With experienced folk running the group and guiding you through the (simple) rules you are in safe hands. At the beginning of the evening teams are drawn, divided between the two mats and split into teams, usually of between 2 and 4 people. You will take it in turns to bowl your ball so that it finishes as close to the jack as possible, avoiding the ‘windmill’ obstacle placed in the centre of the mat – purely to make the game more interesting! The bowls are biased but you soon get the hang of them. Most importantly, half way through the evening everyone stops for a cup of tea and a biscuit.

What do the current club members say?

“We love coming for the camaraderie and social aspect.”

“It’s a great chance to catch up with people since the Covid pandemic.”

“We’re mainly here for a cup o’tea and a blether!”
