We were delighted to hear from Alison Robertson this evening. She and Chris Jackson had visited DG1 today for the Council’s “Waste and Recycling” Community Conversation.
Here’s what they found out:
Each household will have three wheelie bins with colour-coded lids. Big tough bags, coloured to match the bin lids, are available if you’ve no room for three bins.
· One bin is for Paper and Card.
· One bin is for Cans, Plastic Bottles, Tubs, Trays and Cartons.
· One bin is for “Residual Waste” (everything else).
The collection rota will be:
· Week 1: Residual Waste
· Week 2: Paper and Card
· Week 3: Residual Waste
· Week 4: Cans, Plastic Bottles etc
Six towns are also getting a weekly Food Waste collection but this doesn’t extend as far as Caerlaverock. Our food waste should go in the Residual Waste bin.
Glass will not be collected. The Council reckon 90-95% will be covered by deposit return schemes and the remainder should be taken to the nearest collection point (in our case, Hutton Hall in Bankend).
Many thanks Alison and Chris – people have been asking about recycling locally, and it’s great that we can now let them know!
*Disclaimer – we don’t know what colour the bins will be – the image above is from a stock site!
If you have information that will benefit the community, please let us know so we can share with everyone as we can’t get to every event ourselves.

Thank you Alison and Chris: I was not able to get to the meeting but have been a committed “re-cycler” for more than 40 years so really excited about having local recycling. I try not to have too much food waste and anyway most of it is composted by me and then returned to the garden to grow my food a couple of years later…Judith Mylne
Thanks this is really helpful. At last we are to be spared a trip to the recycling centre every few weeks and bags of recyclables building up in the garage. This seems a sensible solution.
Thank you this is really useful information.
