The iconic landmark Caerlaverock Castle recently offered a unique opportunity – for members of the public to experience a ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the conservation work taking place!

Historic Scotland Conservation Directorate carried out a high level survey of the Estate, using scaffolding, Mobile Elevated Platforms (MEWPs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to record a snapshot of the condition at the very top of the castle.

The tour offered the chance to discover how conservationists scaled to the top of the Caerlaverock Castle towers and gave a sneak preview of some of their findings.

Their conservation architect spoke about how the survey results are informing the different conservation works going on at their many properties – with first hand experience from the top of the scaffolding at Caerlaverock Castle.

It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to stand on the top of this unique Scottish castle, take in the stunning views and learn more about what it’s like to conserve monuments at the highest level.
