We met up with joiner Colin Maxwell as he put up the motorhome signs at Glencaple Quay this morning.
We thought long and hard over the design and wording, with input from the community at the Caerlaverock Community Association meeting back in May, as well as from Lady Clare and Savills, to ensure that the message is crystal clear.
But still – as is the way – there were tweaks, editions, additions and alterations that struck us after printing! Sustainability is key – making this work for locals, visitors and businesses.
There is a lot more detailed information on our dedicated Motorhome article. Lets hope that everyone follows ‘the 3 Rs’
– to be respectful, responsible and reasonable.

I don’t understand why there are areas for cars only. What is the difference between people with motorhomes wanting to park for the day and people in cars?
However, it is very kind of you to provide overnight motorhome camping places. We often feel like 2nd class citizens who nobody wants around. Thank you.
Hi Tina, lovely of you to come visit! As campervanners ourselves, my partner and I often feel the same. The issue here is that we have two businesses on the Quay end, who want to ensure they have as much space as possible for car parking. (Whether customers in vans are as valuable, is another discussion). The reason for these arrangement is that on occasions we have up to 23 vans taking up all the available space in busy times. Some very large vans taking up 4 spaces lengthwise too. Many vans stil ignore the arrangement as it is.
Like other places, some arrangement has to be sorted, and this was ours. Theres also been provision for a donation based area at Castle Corner. Other places have had kneejerk reactions to ban vans altogether, with height barriers.
The same old story nationwide really, the compromise here being our solution to try and keep various groups happy.
Personally the downside to it can be a certain group is not represented at all… people who use to wander round the quay for a quiet walk and reflection are now finding themselves in the middle of a car and van park.
*there* are two business, not *ours* :)
